Publication of the List of Pollutants with their Prohibited Concentration Levels by the Minister of Environment and National Beautification, Green and Blue Economy under Section 4(5) of the Marine Pollution Control Act Cap 392A for Public Comment
The Minister of Environment and National Beautification, Green and Blue Economy, in accordance with the Section 4 (5) of the Marine Pollution Control Act CAP 392A, is seeking public comment on the draft list of pollutants with their prohibited concentration levels.
The Marine Pollution Control Act, CAP 392A is intended to protect the marine environment from any source of pollution which may negatively impact human health and the environment. The Act seeks to control the discharge waste, both on land and in the marine environment, that may impact the groundwater and the marine environment. The types of activities that would be regulated by the Act and therefore would have to comply with the standards include the discharge of waste either inland or to the marine environment of effluent from wastewater treatment system and industrial waste.
The list of pollutants with their prohibited concentration levels is a list of physical, chemical, and biological parameters which may be contained in discharges to the environment and provides environmental standards that can be confidently applied. It provides:
i. Ambient Water Quality Standards
Ambient standards are the levels that should not be exceeded in the general marine environment.
ii. End of Pipe Discharge Standards
End of pipe standards recognize that marine environment can assimilate point sources of higher concentrations than appropriate for ambient levels because of immediate dilution and dispersion on discharge.
Further information on the Marine Pollution Control Act CAP 392A and the List of Prohibited Concentration may be found on the Environmental Protection Department’s website using the link http://epd.gov.bb/.
Objections on the standard proposed for inclusion in the list of pollutants with its prohibited concentration level should be submitted via email to epd.secretray@epd.gov.bb or via mail and should be addressed to:
